Kindergarten Challenge
The Kindergarten Challenge (KC) is one of five core programs in Envision Children's Catch Every Child initiative.
KC is a two-hour program that runs on Saturdays during the school year (September-April). There are two class times 9:30 a.m. -11:45 p.m and 12:45-3:00 p.m. All students must be enrolled in a kindergarten class.
Instruction is designed to ensure that all students attending the KC are able to master the following skills/tasks which are recommended by the Ohio Department of Education for students leaving kindergarten for first grade.
Here are of the skills they will learn at the KC:
Understand time concepts such as yesterday, today, and tomorrow
Use correct pencil/marker grip
Identify basic colors: red, yellow, blue, green, orange, black, white, pink, grey, purple and brown
Name, identify, and write upper-case and lower-case letters
Produce all letter sounds
Read basic sight words such as the, an, like, have, look
Spell and write his/her first and last name
Read and write consonant-vowel- consonant words such as bat and fit
Retell, predict, and summarize a story that has been read aloud
Use simple strategies and cues to read independent level books
Communicate an opinion through drawing, writing, or speaking (e.g. “My favorite book is…”)
Use grade appropriate writing conventions when composing and revising a story
Identify and write numbers from 0 to 20
Count by ones and tens to 100
Solve addition problems with sums up to 10
Solve subtraction problems using numbers 0 to 10
Identify basic shapes such as square, triangle, rectangle, and circle
Know and communicate his/her address and phone number
