Kindergarten Challenge

The Kindergarten Challenge (KC) is one of five core programs in Envision Children's Catch Every Child initiative.

KC is a two-hour program that runs on Saturdays during the school year (September-April).  There are two class times 9:30 a.m. -11:45 p.m and 12:45-3:00 p.m.  All students must be enrolled in a kindergarten class.

Instruction is designed to ensure that all students attending the KC are able to master the following skills/tasks which are recommended by the Ohio Department of Education for students leaving kindergarten for first grade.

Here are of the skills they will learn at the KC:

  • Understand time concepts such as yesterday, today, and tomorrow

  • Use correct pencil/marker grip

  • Identify basic colors: red, yellow, blue, green, orange, black, white, pink, grey, purple and brown

  • Name, identify, and write upper-case and lower-case letters

  • Produce all letter sounds

  • Read basic sight words such as the, an, like, have, look

  • Spell and write his/her first and last name

  • Read and write consonant-vowel- consonant words such as bat and fit

  • Retell, predict, and summarize a story that has been read aloud

  • Use simple strategies and cues to read independent level books

  • Communicate an opinion through drawing, writing, or speaking (e.g. “My favorite book is…”)

  • Use grade appropriate writing conventions when composing and revising a story

  • Identify and write numbers from 0 to 20

  • Count by ones and tens to 100

  • Solve addition problems with sums up to 10

  • Solve subtraction problems using numbers 0 to 10

  • Identify basic shapes such as square, triangle, rectangle, and circle

  • Know and communicate his/her address and phone number
